BJI Newsletter, August 2007, #91

A WORD FROM HENRY

BJInsider.com is sponsoring a blackjack tournament on August 17 at the Tournament Blackjack Players Association Tournament in Laughlin, NV. See below for details.

ALSO... we have a great offer for new BJI memberships AND renewals: get the best-selling 2007 American Casino Guide with over $1,000 in coupons for land-based casinos, for only five bucks! See below for details.

This issue of the BJI covers a lot of ground! The Gamemaster explains the principles of developing a proper betting schedule for team play that includes how much to bet based on your edge, the Kelley Criterion, and Risk of Ruin (if you are in the dark about Kelley Criterion, you definitely need to read this article). Many blackjack players are trying their hand at poker. We've got two articles about blackjack pros that recently competed in the 2007 World Series of Poker (WSOP). Joe Pane interviewed Blair Rodman, who beat a gargantuan field of 2,038 players in the $2,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em event, and won $707,000 and a coveted gold bracelet. 2005 World Blackjack Champion Kenny Einiger describes his transition from blackjack pro to poker player and his stunning 8th place finish in a 2007 WSOP event (good for $46,000). And while we are talking about poker, our poker guru Bill Burton explains "dead money" and how you can avoid being eliminated in the early rounds of poker tournaments (as so many players did in the recent WSOP). Back to blackjack, we've got reports of the latest blackjack playing conditions on several cruise ships in Florida (Ian Macalester) and also from Atlantic City (Frank Scoblete). On the blackjack tournament front you'll find articles on how to use surrender (Ken Smith); an analysis of a win-loss swing in Part 3 in a series on blackjack tournament strategy (The Babe); a report on what it was like playing in a recently televised World Series of Blackjack tournament (Norm Sheridan); and a schedule of upcoming blackjack tournaments in the US (courtesy blackjacktournaments.com). Finally, if I asked you what is the chance that you would lose three consecutive hands (excluding ties) in blackjack, would you know the answer? If you are not sure, read my article on Numbers Don't Lie in this issue.

TEAM MONEY MANAGEMENT, Part 2 by The GameMaster

"A critical aspect of successful team play is the development of a proper betting schedule and the adjustment of that schedule as you win or lose; something I loosely call money management. I define it that way because in this article I'm not going to talk about cash management - the movement of $$$ within the team before, during and after playing sessions, although it's an important part of any team's strategy..."

ALL ABOUT POKER: DEAD MONEY by Bill Burton

"Dead Money is a term used in a derogatory way to describe an unskilled player who enters a poker tournament and has virtually no chance of winning. From the large percentage of players eliminated after the first day in the recent WSOP, there was a lot of dead money. There were also a lot of skilled poker pros who could not survive the minefield that was made up mostly by novice poker players. This article offers tips on how you can survive the early rounds of poker tournaments..."
