By The Babe

‘The Babe’ is a dedicated Blackjack Tournament Competitor. He was attracted to the game at the start of the 80’s and has undoubtedly participated in more major blackjack tournaments than anybody. He has made $800,000 in tournament prize winnings, and has won his way to the televised tables of The Million Dollar II Tournament, the Ultimate Blackjack Tour on CBS, and the new 2007 season of the World Series of Blackjack. He still continues to compete, and has three major titles to his credit in the past two years.

Editors Note: Part 1 appeared in June issue of BJI and part 2 in July issue.

Hello again! Here is hoping your tournament life has been exciting and profitable this past month. Maybe the information that follows will help it become even better!

In Part 1 and 2, we were working with the following example:

  1. Second to the last hand of a round.
  2. You are BR1 (have the lead in chip count), and have $76,500.
  3. Your opponent, BR2, has $70,000.
  4. BR2 leads out with a $10,000 bet.
  5. You respond with $14,500, making it possible to double down and gain a maximum bet lead plus a chip over BR2 going into the last hand.
  6. UBT rules apply, with $25,000 max., and 500 min. betting limits.
  7. You are dealt a 7-4 hand vs. dealer 5 upcard.

Part 2 showed us that the Surrender Rule makes little difference to your round winning potential, and that you could be as much as 12% better off by doubling down and going for a maximum bet plus a chip or more lead, even though the risk is turning your lead into a ½ bet deficit. However, we only showed the two outcomes of "win – win" and "lose – lose" on the second to last hand. Now we must explore the possibilities of "win – lose," and "lose – win."
