I have been playing blackjack for over 25 years and I never really considered playing poker in my whole life. Why would I ever think about playing poker when for the last 15 years, I have been one of the most successful tournament blackjack players in the world? Plus, I donít know the first thing about poker. In fact, during my trips to Las Vegas, Iíd peer into the poker rooms and laugh to myself saying, "Those people look so bored."
Well after all these years I can finally say that all those people that looked bored are people that I now play poker with because of one man: Lyle Berman.
About four years ago, I was at the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas watching, and also visiting, some of my friends who were playing in the NBC heads-up poker match. Lyle, who has been a personal friend of my family for over 15 years, said to me, "Hey Kenny, you should be playing poker because there is so much more money in it than blackjack." He continued, "Youíve been so good at blackjack you should really think about giving poker a try." That night while driving home with my wife Kimberly I remember to this day telling her that, "Lyle is right - I need to be playing poker. "
I always like to listen to smart and intelligent people, and I know that Lyle is right at the top of the list. So there I was, a guy that always has been a blackjack player now wanting to not only learn about poker, but be great at the game.
I began learning about poker by reading a bunch of poker books and watching the poker tournaments on TV each night for many hours. I also began going to poker rooms and watched the different games being played. I began asking a lot of questions because I kept getting confused on which hand is better. Is a straight higher than a flush? Is a full house better than a flush?
After much studying and watching, I thought I understood the game enough to tackle the World Series of Poker in 2006. I signed up for the event and
