BJI Newsletter, July 2007, #90

A WORD FROM HENRY

This month's issue of BJI is hot, just like the weather! For starters, The GameMaster gives the low down on Team Play, a great way to make some serious money at blackjack. Ken Smith reports on his unfortunate debacle while playing in a blackjack tournament as an invited guest at the Grand Casino, Tunica. You're not going to believe how he was treated by the Tournament Director (more on this in LVBear's Growls in this issue). ClubUBT has launched a new concept for legally playing blackjack and poker tournaments online and Joe Pane has the details in his interview with UBT founder, Russ Hamilton. You not only can get the edge over your fellow players in blackjack tournaments, but also in craps tournaments, and BJI writer Walker provides the details. Barfarkel's conclusion to his trip to the blackjack tables at Reno was positive as he scores another big win. In his Atlantic City blackjack report, Frank Scoblete discusses the real issue of players over-betting due to the high table minimums prevalent during the summer. Remember the article on the ethics of snookering your fellow table players that appeared in the May issue of BJI? We got some strong feedback from BJI readers on the techniques mentioned in Fred Renzey's article. LVBear really growls this month - the Ken Smith incident, barring video poker and poker players from tournaments, and much more. Tournament guru, The Babe, continues his series on blackjack tournament strategies and poker expert Bill Burton offers some sound tips on how to read your opponents when playing poker. There are some good blackjack tournaments on the near horizon and we've got a summary courtesy of www.blackjacktournaments.com.

If you come across an unfamiliar blackjack term in one of our articles or reports, see our Blackjack Glossary: www.bjinsider.com/questions_glossary.shtml

E-mail subscribers can also read each month's issue online at our web site: BJI Issue #90, July 2007.

Thanks...

"Thanks Henry for putting on a great blackjack class this past weekend in Vegas. After the Sunday class, I took a taxi to the casino that you mentioned in class, and walked away with $650 playing quarter units, spreading 1-5. Overall I made $950 for the weekend." JK

"After the close of school on Sunday, I took my daughter to a casino and played a DD game for about 45 minutes. Counting (with Speed Count) was fine, no problem, and I walked away with a $650 profit on a $200 buy-in! Thanks again for a great seminar. I learned so much and enjoyed the great company. I feel tremendously more 'intelligent' about this fun pastime than only a few days ago." AB

These are unsolicited emails I recently received from Golden Touch Blackjack students, who were gamblers before they took our class, and are now advantage players. In just two days of hands-on training, they were able to leave our blackjack class on Sunday evening, walk into a casino, and play with the edge at blackjack.

The date for our next blackjack training class has changed to the weekend of October 20 and 21 in Las Vegas. Of course, we can't guarantee that you will win the first time you use Speed Count, but we guarantee that Speed Count is the simplest advantage playing technique on the market that will give average players the edge when they play.

For more info on the class, or to sign up, visit www.goldentouchblackjack.com.

AN INTRODUCTION TO TEAM PLAY by The GameMaster

"What I'll cover this time are some of the advantages and disadvantages of team play, particularly from a beginner's point of view, like you, the counter, and a few friends who do not count. I can honestly say that in my personal experience, the most $$$ I ever made at the game came from team play. If you really want to "kill" the casinos, team play at Blackjack is a great way to do it..."

GRAND CASINO TUNICA, aka THE SNAKE PIT by Kenneth Smith

"In mid-June I headed to Tunica with my wife and son, to compete in a blackjack tournament at Grand Casino, one of Harrah's three properties in that market. Instead of a nice weekend vacation, what I got was a clear look into the heart of the snake pit. Tournament director Rob Winkler and his staff really outdid themselves validating all the unpleasant stereotypes of casino personnel. Let me explain..."

THE BEAR GROWLS by LVBear

"More Growls from LVBear covering Grand Casino's abuse of tournament players, Golden Nugget's welching on player's comps, Harrah's arrogance in ejecting a well known poker (and video poker) player; the Libertarian's candidate for President of the US; and former Station Casinos Board Member criminally charged..."

RENO TRIP REPORT – Part 2 by Barfarkel

"The new day started rather badly. I played the D9, H17 single-deck game at my hotel with two other players. We were getting four rounds to the three of us, but the nice pen didn’t help me much. In no time I was in for my original $300 buy-in plus another $200 and down to about $40 left. Then I turned things around a bit and started winning some of it back. The key hand towards the end was in a rising count when I doubled my 6, 4 vs. a dealer’s eight with a $100 bet. Sometimes I peek at my down card, but not this time..."

ATLANTIC CITY BLACKJACK REPORT by Alene Paone and Frank Scoblete

"Unfortunately with all this action, the table minimums, which are always high in Atlantic City, go through the roof in the summer. The real hole most AC gamblers dig in the summer is usually in their bankrolls because they bet too much and play too long..."

READERS WEIGH-IN ON "SNOOKERING" OTHER PLAYERS by Fred Renzey

"In the May issue of BJI, I wrote an article describing how to apply "hand interaction" techniques with other fellow players on your table. These techniques involve selling-off half of your disadvantageous splits, doubling down on other players' hands, and buying other players hands that look like losers but are actually favorites to win. Several Blackjack Insider readers responded via e-mail with their own perspectives and opinions on this "extracurricular" blackjack strategy. Following are some of their feedback..."

THERE IS ALWAYS A BETTER BET, SWINGS, SURRENDER, AND MIND MUDDLING-Part 2 by The Babe

"In last month's article, we determined that there are some occasions, when doubling your bet on the second to the last hand, in order to attain more than a maximum bet lead, is worth risking a lead that will be knocked down to a ˝ max bet deficit if the double is lost. This month we will look at some of the other options and outcomes..."

ALL ABOUT POKER: READING YOUR OPPONENT by Bill Burton

"We all have watched poker tournaments on television and seen some players make reads on their opponents that might have some of us wondering if they were indeed psychic. Too many viewers, it may almost seem supernatural, but in essence it is one of the skills that separate the great players from their competition. Reading your opponents hand is one of the key skills that must be developed in order for a player to succeed in the higher limit games and tournaments..."
