I have dealt everywhere from the "Sweat Houses" to the clubs owned by the "Good Old Boys." In Old Las Vegas, you HAD to know game protection before you got promoted to the floor. I spent the last 14 years as Floor Supervisor, Pit Manager, Director of a Gaming School, Back Up Shift Manager, and Shift Manager. I’ve trained dealers, Floor Supervisors and Pit Managers. Needless to say, I have experienced gaming from all positions in Table Games and have told some of the BEST advantage players in the world that they could not play. I will give you tips on how to avoid getting the dreaded "Tap on the Shoulder."

These are words that an Advantage Player (AP) does not want to hear! Yes, I know card counting and other advantage plays are not illegal. Yes, you are smarter than the average bear! Yes, you are only using your brain to get the advantage. But casinos in many gaming jurisdictions can still ask you to stop playing and leave for no reason.

The laws in Nevada vs. Atlantic City and other parts of the country are different when it comes to backing-off, or worst, barring AP players. In Atlantic City, for example, casinos can not bar AP’s. However, in Nevada, any business can refuse service to anyone for any reason.

How does a casino decide to back off an AP? Every Shift Manager has a different philosophy. Basically there are 3 ways:

    1. Surveillance evaluates their play
    2. They are a known AP in Griffin, CVI, Biometrics Facial Recognition, or the casino’s own data base where they are playing.
    3. Casino Personnel pick them off by their plays, bet spread or they just happen to look suspicious!
