ELEVATOR OF DEATH
by Vinny DeCarlo
The following article is from Vinny DeCarlo, who passed away in June 2014. I received this article (and several others) from Vinny just prior to his passing. As a tribute to Vinny, I decided to publish them in BJI.
Note: As many long-time BJI subscribers know, Vinny was often very critical about how casinos ran their operations (especially their surveillance and security departments) and he wasnít afraid to say so in the true stories he wrote in the BJI. Vinny DeCarlo is also the author of the ground-breaking book for card counters, How to Beat Casino Surveillance Ė Insiderís Secrets for Card Counters, which we published.
"Some People Go through Their Entire Lives Never Seeing Any Violence other than Elmer Fuddís Shotgun Blow Up in His Face. I guess Iím just lucky that way." V.DeCarlo, TV Interview 1997.
Lifeís outlook is different across the pond
Sometimes I ask people if they remember where they were and what they were doing when JFK was assassinated. The answers range from, "Whatís a JFK," to "What ÖJFK was killed?!?!?!? Ö When, where?" Itís all true. I guess weíre just getting old or history as a subject in school is nowadays ignored by todayís scholars.
Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, I grew up thinking that death was just part of life (look how Mussolini was killed). This is how young Italian orphans (like me) were raised.
Enter the "Casino Surveillance Life Style"
I wasnít in the casino business long (about a year) before I came face-to-with my first death. Little did I know that this would be only the first of about 40 over my career in the casino industry. Granted, I saved about three lives and was sued by one family for saving their father (but, weíll save that for another time). The reason for this article is to warn you of possible rouge/untrained security agents that carry weapons (legally) while patrolling the casino. (Now for all you DeCarlo bashers, what follows is a true story. Iím not a drinker or druggie so I couldnít make this crap up.)
Urinating in a Casino Parking Garage can be Hazardous to Your Health
Sometimes your kids will call, sometimes a friend will call, but only Mother Nature calls on a regular basis, and when she calls, itís nothing you can pass off. In other words, when you gotta go, you gotta go; hence the lead-in to my story.
My Weenie is a Burning
This took place in a State that numbers only second to the amount of casinos compared to Las Vegas. Itís a southern and beautiful State with low taxes, low home prices, and an overall good place to live and work (Right now, not in the 50ís or 60ís).
A certain (unnamed) casino had just gone through a major renovation and the casino group hired a team from Las Vegas to do the improvements. This was a three-month job and it was going as scheduled. In fact, the walk through traffic had already increased due to the improvements. It was a win-win situation.
A Full Moon Friday Night
Iím not superstitious but letís face it; things do go a little nuts during a full moon. Yes, we are made of 98% water and the Moon controls the ebb and flow and tidal waves, etc. It was just such a night that a constructor worker (letís call him "Joe") got off work and decided to whoop it up like in the old west days. He had a good time at a neighborhood casino and when he went towards the elevator to get up to his room, "it" happened.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Elevator
Joe was a hard-working guy and on Friday and Saturday nights, he was a hard partier too. This night it was going to be a different, life-altering experience for him...
