THE ADVANTAGE PLAYER’S FINAL FRONTIER

by Vinny DeCarlo

Vinny DeCarlo is the author of How to Beat Casino Surveillance – Insider’s Secrets for Card Counters. He is a retired veteran casino man with over 20 years of upper management experience. His expertise covers the pit, security, surveillance, and he even served as a General Manager. Currently, Vinny travels the states as a freelance reporter and a personal consultant to many Indian casinos. He also appeared on TV and radio shows. According to Vinny, there are two types of casino employees - those that know him, and those that claim to know him; therefore, never believe what you hear.

Editor’s Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of the editor and publisher of the Blackjack Insider Newsletter.

Even though Vinny is a seasoned casino employee, he is also a skilled card counter. This story is based on detailed notes that he took when he interviewed several casino employees.

Author’s Note: This true story was originally over 12 pages long, which included four personal interviews with trustworthy ex-employees that were termed for no reason. All the facts in this condensed article have not been altered.

Recently, while on my way to visit friends on the west coast, I discovered and stopped in the quaint little town of Black Hawk, Colorado. What was once a gold mining town is now a casino gaming town. I discovered that they have imposed limits of $100 on their blackjack tables, but they allow a player to play up to 5+ spots so it’s possible to get $1500 to $2000 on the green felt when the count is favorable. (Most of the blackjack games are six decks with h17, das, rsa; a few offer double-deck games with h17 and das.)

After walking through almost every club, I settled on one of the "Golden" casinos (they have three … the Golden Mardi Gras, The Golden Gulch and the Golden Gates). On my first playing session, the dealer was slow and unsure of every move she made. (I learned later from my playing experience that this was the norm and not the exception.) She was dealing a double-deck game and at one point I was playing heads up with her. She had an ace up, leaked the hole card, and then she offered me insurance. The hole didn’t require it so I passed. She then asked me, "Are you sure because I’d take it if I were you." I stared at here for what felt like a lifetime and finally said "no," and sure enough, she busted and paid me a black cheque. I wasn’t sure if she was trying to leak the hole or if I was very sharp that night.

After another hour of play, she returned from break, and it was heads up again with her. I made a comment to her about all the surveillance cameras and asked her if she feared the folks that ran the Surveillance Department. She laughed and painted me a picture of what I could not believe.

According to the dealer, surveillance doesn’t exist in Black Hawk. In fact, she told me about how a new Vegas based group, Affinity, recently purchased all three Golden casinos and termed the entire surveillance department and replaced them with under-paid, unskilled, security guards. I laughed and asked what Gaming Enforcement thought of that and her response was "they don’t care … I’ve seen them go out with the pit supervisors and get free food and drinks, they’ll seem to work for the casinos."

I asked her about the other casinos in town and she went on to tell me...
