BILOXI/GULFPORT BLACKJACK REPORT

by JPB

JPB has been playing blackjack and counting cards part-time since 1996. He plays throughout the country but primarily in Missouri. He has been a Green Chip member of BJ21.com for four years and one-time winner of the Post-of-the-Month. JPB is a professional engineer with three engineering degrees and works as a consulting engineer.

Observations of casino playing conditions were made in May 2011. Casinos visited include:

Island View (Gulfport)

Beau Rivage

Hard Rock

Treasure Bay

It’s been about two years since I played blackjack in the Biloxi/Gulfport area. Back then, I found the games mediocre, except for the Beau Rivage, which was one of my favorite places for double deck. However, I was disappointed when I heard that most of the casinos, including Beau Rivage, had switched from S17 to H17. I have always viewed the few remaining DD games with S17 (particularly if you can resplit aces) as good, even if the penetration is mediocre. After all, the house advantage on the DD, S17, no RSA is only 0.19%, and only 0.14% if you can resplit aces. I returned in May 2011 to see how many DD S17 games were left. Listed below are observations from my May 2011 trip.

Island View

The Island View appears to be the casino that the locals visit. I liked being able to park on the ground level and just walk in and out. I do not remember the penetration being anything to get excited about two years ago, but at least the games were S17. Regrettable, they have converted all tables to H17. At first, I only found one DD table with $15-1000 limits that had about four players. I saw two empty six-deck tables so I decided to try them. Unfortunately, the penetration was not much better than 4.0/6.0 decks ... just a terrible game.

I decided to go ahead and play the crowded DD. Penetration was consistent, at about 45-50%. Amazingly, even with three other players at the table and the poor penetration, I saw a running count of a +11! I was sure this was not going to happen again, so I nonchalantly threw out a stack of eight or nine black chips. Fortunately, I won the bet and when the pit boss came around to investigate the "checks play" call, I was back to betting green (with very little probability of betting heavy black action again with such poor penetration). However, I found an empty $25-1000 table in the high limit area, but the rules were the same and the penetration was no better, and maybe worse. In addition, the pit boss had nothing better to do than watch my every bet. If the penetration were good, that would be different, but with such a poor game, I saw no point in playing any longer.

Island View rates a D on my scale.
