Meet the Luckiest Woman Alive! by Frank Scoblete

Patricia DeMauro took the dice in her hands for only the second time in her life and four-hours-eighteen-minutes later she had rolled a world-record 154 times before sevening out. She broke two previous world records: one for the longest roll by the Captain, 147 numbers in 2005, and one for the longest time, three-hours-six-minutes by Stanley Fujitake in 1989 (118 rolls).

The odds of her doing this? Give or take, the odds were 5.59 billion-to-one according to mathematician Stuart Ethier. Yes, 5.59 billion to one.

I’ve had several long discussions with Patricia and her close friend John Capra, who was at the table with her, since her epic achievement and I’ve written a behind and "in front of" the scenes exclusive article for Casino Player magazine. Yes, what she did was all luck…good luck…make that great luck…no, make that greater than great luck. Still she walks on the top of Mount Olympus alone among the gods.

Amazingly there has been so much misinformation about her roll; so many idiotic suppositions and analyses in print and on the Internet, that the event many of you have read about has very little to do with the event that actually took place. My God, the newspapers, magazines and television shows didn’t even spell her name correctly! Start with that and head onward into confusion.

When Patricia called me the very first thing I asked her was…"Would you like to be my very special guest at the World Casino Championships in Vegas in August?" She and John immediately said yes. Then we talked and talked about her roll and its aftermath.

Most players have never been on craps hands that last 50 to 60 rolls or more, much less being anywhere near a hand of 154. Fortunately, I’ve been on quite a few mega-monsters, including the Captain’s 147, my own 89, Jerry "Stickman’s" 77, and many in the 50s to 70s by various shooters in Golden Touch including the Dominator. Let me tell you, no matter how successful an evening of blackjack can be, nothing surpasses a monster roll at craps. It is a mind-boggling experience, emotionally and financially.

The 16 other players at the table with Patricia DeMauro and John Capra had an experience that no one has ever had. Just think: To be on the longest craps roll in history!

If you wish to meet Pat DeMauro and talk to her about her epic accomplishment, come to The World Casino Championships in Las Vegas on August 14, 15 and 16. We’ll be holding it at the Clarion Hotel and Suites on Flamingo Blvd.

The weekend has nine tournaments in craps, Pai Gow poker, slots, baccarat and blackjack. Our friendly editor and publisher, Henry Tamburin will be running the blackjack tourney and he’ll also give several classes in blackjack play.

We’ll be having a Meet and Greet party on Friday evening, lunches on Saturday and Sunday, and a giant Awards Dinner to crown the champions of all the tournaments and also The World Casino Champion. For a free brochure call 1-800-944-0406 or follow the link below:

Our Readers Report

If you wish to contribute your reports or observations, we need to receive them by the 24th of the month for the next month. Write to: fscobe@optonline.net

We have many readers who send us their reports on various aspects of Atlantic City and we do have some that give us reports just about every month – so we have decided to give them the fame and glory (as opposed to "fortune and glory") of their own columns.

You will note that our correspondents tend to have somewhat different views. Always it is up to you to decide which games you want to play by scouting them for yourselves.

The Jon Report

The pressure continues on AC. Nearby Pennsylvania casinos are now considering table games. Delaware will have sports betting and table games soon. AC is going to need to find its niche in order to draw customers. They can no longer survive as the convenient place to play. It will be interesting to see how AC responds to table-game competition. Do they make the games worse in order to squeeze out more profit, or do they make the games better in an attempt to draw more people in to play?

A few places are offering BJ tournaments now. Trump Plaza ($1000 1st prize on Wednesdays), Hilton ($1000 guaranteed on Thursdays) and Resorts are all offering accumulation style tournaments. Tropicana is offering a $5000 tournament on Friday nights. The opening round is accumulation style and then you advance to play a tournament against other players.

The only thing that I saw a little different is that the three Bally’s properties are cutting a little deeper again. Wild Wild West, Claridge and Bally’s were offering about 75 to 80% penetration. Everything else I saw was about the same.

In light of my limited news I would like to share a little story. A couple months ago I hit a casino on the boardwalk and saw one of those elusive $5 tables. The penetration looked good, so I thought I’d give it a shot. After all, playing a $5 table is almost as good as back counting I thought. Well, I ended up having a great thing happen at a terrible time. The count began to rise and then it shot up through the roof suddenly. It was the highest count I had ever seen. I felt trapped. I have just played a couple shoes at $5 a hand. When the count began to rise I had raised my bets a little but now it had skyrocketed as a stream of small cards poured out of the deck.

So what do you do? Big advantage but I was playing small ball. My only hope was to put on an act. I had just lost a couple medium sized bets and the chips in front of me. So I got steamed. Pulled out $400 dollars and put out two bets of $200 each – a healthy 80-to-1 spread. The guy standing behind me must have felt sorry for this poor upset patron who had just lost a few smaller hands. So he says, maybe you’ll get two blackjacks and I did! I then ran off a few more nice hands after that and got out of there.

The moral of the story? Think before you sit down at a table. What are your goals, and what do you plan to bet? Don’t sit down at a table when the minimum is too high and you can’t effectively spread and don’t sit down where the minimums are too low and you can’t bet what you want to bet in a good situation.

 Well, hope this helps.

Jon

AC Rich Reports

My AC run June 11-14:

Final Tally: Plus 61 units with about nine hours of play.

Again I stick mostly with the high limit tables with a 1-10 spread, hit them hard for max of 45 min or less, and run. Used multiple disguises for the first time with much success. Vary from 1-3 hands. Played uncovered at the Trump Plaza. They are finally getting a little deeper in penetration, much better than last month. Avg of 70%P.......well, not much better. Again I notice they are hypersensitive to counters so be sure to use cover plays abundantly. The best play time is between 4-7 am. Who in their right mind would count then?

Me

Checked out Bally's......sucked.............

Caesars was solid at 70-75%P.

Harrah's was the same but very few tables open for high limit......and all other green chip tables are eight-decks.

Again Plaza had green chip 6 deck, but at 66% P.....it’s a tough game.

Here are our ratings for July 2009. We thank many of our readers for helping us to stay as updated as possible. There may be some disagreements in ratings among our correspondents but all these reports are based on individuals’ experience. A word to the wise: it’s always best to check out the casinos for yourselves.

Rating system:

***** = Excellent

**** = Very Good

*** = Good

** = Fair

* = Poor.

BALLY’S PARK PLACE: Harrah’s after birth. Not a premier place any more. No mid-shoe entry in high roller room and on a few of the main $50 tables in casino. Mixed reviews about how deep the penetration is but we found it in the 75 percent area. All 8-deck games except for the high roller room action. The hitting on soft 17 is now a fact all over the place. Crews are friendly. Hotel has declined a lot. Two stars: * *

BORGATA: The casino where Patricia DeMauro had her spectacular 154-number craps roll. Penetration is around 70 to 75 percent on all games, including the six deckers which still make up most of the casino. Craps has long tables, 14-footers, and very bouncy, and not worth playing unless you like to see dice flying off the tables or gaze upon beautiful cocktail servers ducking out of the way or if you see Patricia DeMauro at the table. Go elsewhere for craps, except for Taj which has mimicked Borgata’s craps tables. This is a happening place and caters to a swinging young crowd. Okay casino for Golden Touch Blackjack. Three stars: * * *

CAESARS: No change. Down, down, down the BJ games go. So many more tables hitting soft 17 now. That brings this casino down a big notch. Directly across from Caesars is The Pier, which is a pleasure to walk through – a must see attraction in AC with some of the finest restaurants and views. Caesars itself also has excellent restaurants but you have long walks to find them. Cheerful place and worthy of the name it bears. Hotel/casino rating is A. They are going deeper at blackjack too but that H17 detracts from this somewhat. You can expect about 75 percent penetration with most of the dealers. The main floor of eight-deckers has some of the upper-limit tables ($25 and $50) with no mid-shoe entry. All the games in the high roller pit are also no mid-shoe entry with $100 and higher minimums. Table game action has improved and that is very noticeable in the blackjack pits – which are all 8-deck games. Six-deck games in high roller room have 80 percent penetration, as do the eight-deckers on the main casino floor. The craps games here are good with 12-foot tables and friendly crews. The tables are high so smaller controlled shooters should wear their "special shoes." Two stars: * *

CLARIDGE: Penetration is now better. Two stars: * *

HARRAH’S: Harrah’s has ruined more good casinos in this country than hoof-and-mouth disease has ruined more things having "hoofs" and mouths. In Tunica it took the best casino in the country, the Horseshoe, and made it mediocre; did the same for the Grand in Tunica and Rio in Vegas. All Harrah’s properties are slot machine heavens – for slot players, and table game hell for table-game players. Hitting soft 17 now. Penetration now ranges somewhat below the 75 percent area. Resplitting allowed except aces. No midshoe entry in the high roller room of 6-deck action, with the rest of the casino being 8-decks. But we must warn you; this is a big slot place. Sadly, Harrah’s properties in Las Vegas and in Tunica are getting awfully bad reports about how some of the boxmen treat customers who practice a careful shot at craps and there is overwhelming paranoia at the blackjack games as well. So beware when outside AC. Harrah’s prefers slot customers and all their casinos tend month after month to be adding more machines. One star: *

HILTON: No change from last issue. Wild swings in penetration on blackjack and many more eight-deck games. Penetration getting worse even as you read this. Place is in trouble. The hitting of soft 17 brings this place down a peg as well. Resplitting allowed except aces. High roller room is 6-decks; rest of the casino is 8-decks with a few $25/$50 6-deckers on occasion. No mid-shoe entry on the six-deckers. High table minimums, especially on weekends, a lot of $25 tables, rare $10 tables. Penetration about 70 percent. For craps, we are dealing with 14-foot tables and a couple of 12 footers. Two stars: * *

RESORTS: No change from last issue. Might be going, going, gone before you know it. Getting a little better with blackjack though. But more tables are hitting soft 17. Not really worth playing. Two stars: * *

SHOWBOAT: No change. This used to be a great hotel-casino. Now it is a great hotel and forget the casino. Another Harrah’s disaster. High roller room got some good reports but the rest of the casino is becoming one big slot machine. Harrah’s has changed this into a slot joint. Where are the table games? Had been one of the best and now is one of the worst blackjack games in AC. Great rooms; good restaurants and that about sums it all up. One star: *

TROPICANA: Sold? Maybe. Down hill? Yes. Goodbye 4-deck games! Hello 8-deck games. Casino and hotel are getting a little seedy. Its new name is now "Slopicana." One star: *

TRUMP MARINA: No change from last issue. Okay, mixed reports. Rooms are clean; hotel is well kept, with great restaurants. On blackjack they are hitting soft 17 on main floor, but not in the high roller room. Six-deck games in high roller room and eight-deck games on the main floor have penetration at 80 percent mark, but you won’t find any dealers going much deeper. Games are mostly $15/$25 and up, especially on weekends. No mid-shoe entry on the six-deckers but you can jump in and out on the eight-deckers. Hitting on soft 17. Craps tables are 12-footers with 5X odds and good crews. Two and one half stars: * * ½ *

TRUMP PLAZA: No change from last issue. If this place closes, where will all the low-life scum-sucking creeps go to hang out? Major disappointment in the center of the Boardwalk. Blackjack? Paranoid. Craps? Paranoid! Casino? Dark, unsavory. Restaurants? Mediocre. Just about all six-deck games with somewhat low penetration of 67 to 70 percent, depending on the dealer. No midshoe entry on games outside high-roller pit but you can find $25 (a few) to $50 minimums on these. Allows resplits, except aces. All tables are $10 and higher. Craps tables are 12-footers. A real big smattering of low-pants wearing steely-eyed low-lifes. One star: *

TRUMP TAJ MAHAL: Recently a Shift Manager was murdered here – shot several times in the stomach. But the blackjack is improving. Now they are hitting soft 17 except in $25 or higher games. First they screwed up the craps tables so the dice go flying off the table every third roll and now they have decided to give the blackjack games a wicked colonoscopy with barbed wire. Great hotel and great restaurants and great entertainment. Also, generally great dealers and pit personnel. Too bad it isn’t the place to play any more. Two stars: * *

WILD, WILD WEST: No change; no gold-rush either. The silver rush is over too. This place is over as well. Another Harrah’s wipe out! All eight-deck games with H17 – insane. This is a part of Bally’s Park Place and Harrah’s is looking to sell this complex like a pan of fools gold. Penetration is about 75 percent on all games. For craps this is a fun place to play with one 5X odds table and one 2X odds table. I remember when this place had many more tables. Crews are very friendly. One star: *
