THE TRUTH ABOUT UNBALANCED COUNTING SYSTEMS

Dr. Brett Harris received his Ph.D. in physics (in the area of Quantum Gravity). He developed an interest in blackjack in the late 1990s. Along with Karel Janecek and others, he was instrumental in the development of what has become known as ‘Optimal Betting Theory’, and the discovery that it was possible to calculate a true count for unbalanced counting systems. In this article, I will explain how unbalanced counting systems arise from a generalisation of balanced count systems and deliver two different, but complementary benefits. As shown in the famous book, ‘The Theory of Blackjack" by Peter Griffin, the advantage to the player before any cards are dealt varies in a way that is dependent on the cards which have been removed from the deck or the shoe. This variation can be quantified for each card value (for a given set of rules), giving ten betting ‘Effects of Removal’ (EOR’s). Further, for each combination of dealer up-card and player decision, there are also individual sets of EOR’s giving the change in player expectation in that particular situation...
