It is now 1982 and the team had expanded to 10 members divided between "counters" and "big players." Although all the team members were proficient at counting, I decided that certain members were better as "Big Players." (A "Big Player" (BP) is defined as a player who would receive signals from his team mates regarding the betting and playing decisions, and when to enter and leave the game via a signal from the "counter.") The BP never looked at the cards (except his own) and, therefore, did not attract "heat" (attention) from pit personnel. The counter at each table made minimum bets which never escalated by more than four units. This meant that the counter never drew attention from pit personnel and could play without the threat of being barred. The counter also had to know how to "read the pit," meaning knowing when they were becoming suspicious of the BP, and if this was the case, he would signal the BP to leave the table.
