Poker is a card game that uses a standard 52 card deck. The objective of poker is to win the pot (money put in the middle)
by showing down the best five card poker hand. The best hands in order are: High card, one pair, two pair, three of a kind, a
straight (five cards in consecutive order), a flush (five cards of the same suit), a full house (three of a kind plus a pair),
four of a kind, a straight flush (five consecutive cards of the same suit) and royal flush (straight flush from ten through ace).
The most common of all poker games is Texas Hold'em (also spelled Holdem or Hold em). This game is played online as well as in casinos all over the world.
Poker progresses through a series of betting rounds. The number of betting rounds is dictated by the type of poker being played. Each time
a player bets, other players have the option to call, raise or fold. If a player calls, play continues. If a player raises, the other players
must now call the amount of the raised bet to continue. If the player folds, he is out of the hand and not eligible to win the pot.
The betting structure in poker allows players to employ the element of bluffing, that is, to bet without the best hand.
It is this factor that adds complexity to the game. Any player that folds to a bet risks giving up a pot that could be theirs if the bettor does not really have the best hand. If you are playing Texas Holdem tournaments, this could mean a big loss if you leave the hand and an end to your shot at the title.
Different varieties of poker include stud games, where some of a player's cards are visible to his opponents; draw games,
where a player can replace some of his cards with new ones and community card games, where certain cards are shared among
all the players. Read the complete Texas Hold em Rules
before you play which will give insight into the varieties and strategies inherent to poker that make it one of the most popular and exciting card games being played today.
